Artist talk Assignment |Don Williams|
|Don Williams|
The artist talk
that I attended was artist Don Williams. The talk took place on Wednesday December
9th. Don Williams is a sculptor who produced very unique and obscure
pieces of art. Don was also telling us how, when he does have time to work on
his own projects, he works on more than one at a time. He said he does this so
he never gets “stuck or lost” on one project.
The first sculpture
of his he talked about (my favorite of his set) was one that included 9 cups
without handles. He mentioned that he had former client who had him produce
many different kinds of cups. Throughout his speech he would talk about how
when he is working he brainstorms all of these projects that he can make over
the summer when he is not teacher and has some free time. So after he completed the task of making cups
for a client, he began making cups without handles for a project of his own.
Williams spoke about the making of these “cups without handles” in great
detail. He went into great depth about how the cups were made in a “wood fire
kiln”.
I was completely
unaware that a wood fire kiln even existed let alone the process that goes into
keeping the fire going on the kiln. Williams told his audience that a, “community
of people” was needed for the word fire kiln, in order to keep the fire going.
I found this process extremely interesting. I was amazed at the amount of
effort and time (about 4 days) went into this type of kiln.
Don said that he loved
the wood fire kiln and that the time and effort put into the process was
completely worth it. Don narrowed his cups down to nine. The nine cups that
were displays ranged from pale greens to darks browns almost. Don said that
when the cups were in the kiln, the process of coloring the cups was, “out of his hands”. I find that to be extremely
daring and something that not many sculptors would chose to do, adding to his
unique style as a sculptor.
Don Williams’s artist
talk was the first artist’s talk that I have been to. After listening to his speech I would most definitely be interested in going to more. I find it
interesting not only seeing other peoples work’s of art, but hearing their
thought process behind their art work.
